Antique Aesthetic Movement Large Silver Locket Engraved Japonesque Patt 1870
A beautiful aesthetic movement large size silver oval shaped locket dating from circa 1870 - 1880.
This very pretty item of jewellery was probably given as a gift to a sweetheart. It is made of silver - unmarked but tests as such. It is 2 1/4 inches long, including the bale and has a beautifully detailed engraved design in the Japonesque style, a very popular look of the period. The design features water, lotus flowers, bamboo and birds within geometric sections.
The flat fronted locket opens to reveal a compartment with a replacement perspex "glass" and has its original inner ring to hold it in place. The locket is in lovely condition for its age and it opens and closes with a positive snap. Would be ideal for pairing with a locket chain or a book chain or even worn on a ribbon, It is a lovely example and weighs 15 grammes unpacked.
