Antique Blue and White Transferware Sauce Tureen River Landscape circa 1850

A blue and white transfer ware sauce tureen and lid with a river landscape transfer printed design by an unknown maker. This very decorative item of early Victorian era blue and white is unmarked  but the general design, pattern and shape relates to circa 1850.

The round shaped quadrate footed tureen with two horizontally looped handles and a lid with a notch for a ladle and a floral bud finial or rose bud knob.

The pattern is very attractive and features scrolling floral borders to the foot rim and lid.  The front and back are both printed with the same scene which consists of two cows, one lying down in a field in front of a river that has two bridges in the middle distance. There is a sailing boat in front of the first bridge. There are villages on each side of the bridges each with a church tower with a steeple, there are mountains in the background.

It measures approximately 6 1/2 inches high by approx 7 1/2 inches wide by 6 inches deep. Together, the tureen and lid weigh 663g.

It is in good order with a small chip to the rim of the tureen and on the rim of the lid. There is  and a little body crazing and discolouration to the tureen, commensurate with age and use. A nice item to add to any collection of Victorian blue and white transferware.
