Antique Blue Transferware Sauce Tureen and Stand Burgess & Leigh Aesthetic c1880
A Burgess and Leigh sauce tureen and stand with an aesthetic movement transfer printed design, titled Madras.
This very decorative item of late Victorian era blue and white is marked on the base of the stand or plate with the mark of Burgess & Leigh of Hill Pottery. There are also the impressed marks, C S and 188. 88 possible represents the year of manufacture, 1888.
The oval shaped tureen has a footed base, two handles and a lid with a notch for a ladle. It measures 5 1/2 inches high by approx 9.5 inches wide by 4 1/2 inches. The underplate is a little over 9 1/2 inches wide. The pattern is very attractive and features stylised Lotus leaf panels, foliage and a Pugin type border with decorative motifs.Together, the tureen and stand weigh 1197g. They are in good order with a small chip to the rim of the tureen and a little body crazing and discolouration to the tureen, commensurate with age and use. A nice item to add to any collection of Victorian blue and white transferware.
