Antique Large Blue and White Jug Transfer Ware Arabian Sketches Patt Rare c 1830

A large antique footed baluster shaped English pottery blue and white transfer printed jug or pitcher with a rare equestrian pattern titled Arabian Sketches.

The pedestal jug shows an Arabian figure group with horses, some of the men appear to be holding muskets. They are set in a typically European looking landscape on either side of the body of the jug and there are smaller vignettes on the outside and inside of the spout. There are large foliate scrolls and floral motifs and the jug has an ornate C scroll handle with a thumb rest.

This jug has an ornate backstamp with the name of the pattern "Arabian Sketches" but there is no identifying maker's name or initials. The firm of William Hackwood produced a number of different designs under the series name of Arabian Sketches but this item has different scenes and there is a different backstamp and no maker's monogram, as with the Hackwood pieces. The shape of the jug is reminiscent of the work of John and William Ridgway who produced items like this around 1830, during late George IV or William IV period in the second quarter of the 19th century.

The jug has an old riveted make do and mend repair near the handle that has been very neatly done, with three rivets. The handle has not been broken off, only the the jug rim  has been cracked and then repaired. There is a small related chip to the top right of the top handle terminal. Condition otherwise is very good with just a couple of very minor glaze rubs to the rim of the spout.

The jug is a very decorative and collectable item that will appeal to any collectors of rare blue and white transfer printed patterns, equestrian patterns make do and mend repairs or highly decorative pitchers.
