Antique Coalport porcelain square dessert plate hand painted botanicals pattern number 4/412 probably painted by Stephen Lawrence circa 1840

An antique John Rose Coalport finely painted botanical square shaped dessert plate, circa 1840, decorated with hand painted flowers probably painted by Stephen Lawrence. The centre of the plate has a yellow and pink tulip with Harebells surrounded by four cartouches filled with floral sprays on each corner. The cartouches are within a rich cobalt blue, yellow and gilt border with the rim being ornately blind pierced and moulded with rococo scrolls.

The item is unmarked but the pattern is number 4/412 and was made by John Rose and Co. of Coalport, Shropshire, England circa 1840. This beautifully decorative dessert plate was probably made in the early years of the Victorian era. 

It stands approximately 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) high and is 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm)  square and 10 7/8 inches (27.5cm) across the corners. It is in very good antique condition with some good professional restoration in the distant past. commensurate with age and use. The price takes the condition into consideration. The last few images show a similarly decorated centrepiecee being offered for sale separately, that could be used with this plate as a stand if so desired.

Geoffrey Godden in Coalport and Coalbrookdale Porcelains identified pattern 4/412 from the fifth pattern book 1840-41 as the work of Stephen Lawrence. Lawrence was a gifted flower and fruit painter working at Coalport between 1820 and circa 1846.
