Creamware Prattware Plaque Classical Figure Polyhymnia Green Rim Antique c 1790
Prattware wall plaque in creamware with a relief moulded figure of a classical Greek muse leaning upon a column. We believe this is Polyhymnia or Polymnia the Muse of sacred poetry, sacred hymn, dance, and eloquence as well as agriculture and pantomime from Greek mythology. (Greek: Πολυύμνια: "the one of many hymns")
The plaque has no makers marks, it was probably produced by one of the Staffordshire factories in around 1790. There is an old collections label on the back. The low relief border pattern has been coloured with a green pratt ware high temperature glaze.
This plaque stands 7 1/4 inches high and is 4 3/4 inches wide.It weighs 182g unpacked. It is in very good condition with no cracks nor restoration, a tiny glaze chip to the drapery of her robe minor glaze scratching to high points small firing tear below the column. The plaque is slightly bowed from manufacture. (not completly flat). Please see the images.
This is a highly collectable item of antique pottery and very decorative for display or to add to any collection.
