Antique English Yellow Ware Pottery Rare Oyster Jar with Brown or Mocha Bands - Oyster Barrel shape circa 1840 - 13cm high 1.5 pint capacity
A highly collectable and quite rare item of antique English yellow ware. This oyster jar has been made in the shape of an oyster barrel and dates from circa 1835 - 1860.
The jar stands approximately 13 cm or 5 1/4 inches high and has a diameter of 12cm or 4 3/4 inches. It is made of a yellow coloured earthenware and there are hand painted brown or mocha coloured bands, in slight relief from the body. There is an integral rod or bar across the rim which is higher to one side with a curved edge, this forms a handle. The jar has a capacity of 1 1/2 pints.
The jar weighs 435 grammes and is in good antique condition with just a few minor chips to the rim and a hairline crack to the bar. The painting to the bands is a bit uneven but this dates from manufacture.
This is a relatively rare, very desirable item for any collector and a hard to find item.
