Antique Georgian to early Victorian Day to Night Articulated Drop Earrings - Gold Plated set with Garnets & Split Pearls circa 1830

Here we have a superb pair of highly desirable Georgian to early Victorian day to night earrings made of a gold coloured metal with a high carat 14 or 15 carat gold plate or wash and 9ct gold ear wires. 

The earrings date from circa 1820 -1840 and have an ingenious design that takes the wearer from day wear to night. The top section is a diamond shape set with a single garnet. It has an integral top fastening hinged ear wire. This enables the long, ornate dropper to be added for night time wear. The top section has an overall drop of 1.8 cm and the articulated dropper, which is made up of three sections, is approximately 4.5 cm long. In imperial measure, the overall drop is 2 1/2 inches, so they really make a statement when worn 

The dropper section has two eternal knots, representing eternal love and they are joined together by a diamond shape to echo the shape of the top section or dormeuse. 

The knot sections are engraved and each is set with a band of alternating garnets and split pearls. Altogether there are 36 stones. The ear hooks are hinged and click into a small notch at the top of the diamond shaped section. They have to be threaded through the ear from the back, so a little fiddly to do but very secure once in place. 

They are truly beautiful antique earrings and a rare find. There is some minor wear to the plate, please see the images. Would make a lovely gift or a treat for yourself.  The box is for display only and is not included in the sale. They will be shipped in a secure modern box.
