Antique Georgian James Dixon & Son Large Pewter Food Cover Cloche or Dome Pre-1835 - size 15 3/4 x 12 1/2 by 9 inches

A very decorative antique pre-1835 Georgian style pewter meat cover, plate cover, cloche or dome for a 16" or larger meat plate. The cover was made by the renowned Sheffield maker, James Dixon and Son. Their maker's mark is underneath along with the number 399 and the bugle and banner mark. As the name is Dixon and Son not Sons, this dates the cover to pre-1835. The melon shaped ribbing to the oval cover, was a popular style of the Georgian era and typical of metal ware designs of the era. 

James Dixon and Son operated from Cornish Place, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. This mark dates from the period 1823 until 1835. 

The cover measures 40.5 cm x 32.5 cm and stands 23.5 cm high - 15 3/4 x 12 1/2 by 9 inches. It weighs 1.85 kg unpacked.

The handle is very attractive and ornate with two gourd or melon shapes at the leaf and floral scrolled terminals. Covers such as these would have been used at the dinner table of a very wealthy home, to keep warm the meat dishes on large plates underneath. There is a hanging loop at the top for hanging on a kitchen wall. I have a matching, larger version of the cover, also listed for sale. They look stunning hung together and make a real design statement as well as being usable items for the table.
