An attractive and well executed tranquil pastoral farm animal watercolour painting by the highly regarded and well documented artist Claude Cardon (born - Claude Lorraine Clark 1864 - 1937). The watercolour is titled in pencil on the back " A Field at Whitstable Kent" by Claude Cardon.
This lovely landscape painting is traditional in style and of idyllic rural country scene. The scene consists of six unsheared sheep, in the centre of the painting, resting in a field under a fence and hedge, below them to the right they are joined by a pair of ducks also seated. In the background is a building, possibly a farm stead, with tall trees all with a sky with broken cumulus clouds.
Claude Cardon was a successful artist during his lifetime, he exhibited a number of times at the Royal Academy between 1893-1915, Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery, the Manchester City Art Gallery and with the Royal Society of British Artist’s at Suffolk Street, London. Claude was the son of the Landscape painter Samuel John Clark. Claude had used the pseudonym Claude Cardon for a painting that was accepted by the RA in 1893 he subsequently used that name for his work.
The painting has the interlaced CC monogram in the bottom left corner and is in a mildly ornate original gilt plaster wooden frame, glazed and mounted on gilded bevel cut card with black printed lettering CLAUDE CARDON to the bottom centre of the mount.
The frame measures 16 5/8 inches (42.3 cm) by 13 5/8 inches (34.7 cm) overall. The visible painting size is 9 3/4 inches (24.8 cm) by 6 3/4 inches (17.2 cm) and weigh a total of 1.4 kg unpacked. The painting is in very good condition although the frame has some gilt disguised damage and losses. There is some discolouration and staining the the mount on the top left and bottom right.
This is a great antique original watercolour painting for any collector of Claude Cardon's work or very decorative rural pastoral animal scenes. A highly decorative and desirable picture of late 19th to early 20th century artwork.
We have also listed separately for sale a very similar matching painting but titled "A Summer' Day" which has cows ruminating in a field and is shown in the last image.
