Antique Hand Carved Black Forest Frame Porcelain Plaque Madonna Della Sedia
An antique Black Forest ornately carved wooden frame, possibly produced in Brienz Switzerland, with a hand painted oval hard paste porcelain plaque of the quality and style usually attributed to KPM Porcelain, the Royal Porcelain Manufactory, Berlin Germany. The plaque and frame date to around 1880.
The oval plaque has a transfer printed outline with hand painted and coloured decoration of a mother holding a child after the "Madonna della Sedia" (Madonna of the Chair) by Raphael (Italian, 1483-1520). The original painting is in Palazzo Pitti collection in Florence, this copy is unsigned. The detail to the plaque is superb and the visible length of it is 2 inches.
The elaborate, hand carved frame has two carved shutters either side of the plaque (these are not designed to close) and a delightful neo-classical design with scrolls and leaves. It has an easel back stand and is 7 5/8ths inches high by 5 inches wide.
The frame has a few losses and there is a split at the backboard of the frame near one of the screws. Despite the damage, it displays well and is a lovely example for any collector of Black Forest or KPM porcelain. It weighs 70 grammes unpacked.
