Antique Indian Lucknow Silver Repousse Chased Dish Animals marked Elephant Smith
A beautiful antique Indian Lucknow chased and repousse white metal pin dish that is unmarked but tests as silver. The body has a wavy or scalloped rim and has been further embellished with repousse decoration with a continuous forest or jungle scene of date palm trees, shrubs and flowers with a number of animals including elephants, birds, one like a heron, lions, and possibly a jackal.
This lovely example of antique repousse silver has no hallmark but has a smiths mark of an engraved elephant on the base. The base appears to have been soldered into place after the repousse work had been carried out.
We believe that this dish dates from late 19th century circa 1890 in the late Victorian period during the time of the Raj.
Condition: Good antique condition, has a small tear to one of the indentations on the wavy rim.
The dish stands approximately 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) high and the body has a length of 4 1/4 inches ( 10.7 cm) and is 3 3/4 inches wide ( 9.5 cm). It weighs 69 grammes unpacked.
