An antique Japanese Arita porcelain plate with a scalloped and ribbed cavetto and a low relief central eighteen spiral petalled Chrysanthemum flower. The whole plate has been hand painted in an Imari palette and gilded, there are three lotus leaf shaped cartouches each with hōō, HoHo bird, Feng Huang or Chinese Phoenix. Between each cartouche there are hand painted flowers and leaf scroll pattern in iron red enamels on an underglaze blue ground with gilding. The central flower has alternate blue and red petals each painted with a floral scroll and the red ones have a small flower. The underside is painted with three equally spaced floral scrolls and butterflies.

This is a good quality item and a very decorative example of  Arita ware dating from around 1880 in the Victorian period of the UK and the Meiji era in Japan (1868 -1912). 

The porcelain plate is in excellent antique condition with no cracks or chips, no crazing, no repairs. It rings when flicked with a finger. There is some minor fritting to the front and some wear to the enamel and gilding on the front. It measures -  8 1/2 inches ( 21.6 cm ) diameter and 1 3/16 inches ( 3.1 cm ) in height, it weighs 441g unpacked.
