Antique Job Ridgway pearlware pottery lobed & fluted dish decorated in blue & white transferware with the Curling Palm pattern circa 1802

A highly collectable and attractive example of under glaze blue and white transfer printed pottery dating from Georgian period circa 1802 - 1808. This beautiful pearlware dish has a blue tinted glaze pearlware body and is printed with the Curling Palm pattern. We believe that it was made by Job Ridgway at his Cauldon Place pottery in Shelton ( later Hanley ), Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England in the United Kingdom.

This wide and low round shaped dish or bowl has a scalloped rim and a lobed body with six pairs of equally spaced narrow flutes between six wider ones. It stands on a short foot rim which follows the shape of the fluted body above.

There are a number of predominant features in the under-glaze tissue paper transfer printed pattern which include: a figure with a parasol crossing the long curved seven arch bridge. A staircase to the left hand side of the bridge that leads into the foreground. The Asian or oriental buildings or pagodas one with a figure in the pavilion. Another figure standing on a tiled area within one of the ornate buildings. A further figure standing on a tiled area of a fenced garden. The distant upper island with a house also with a fenced garden.  A man standing up in a boat on a lake he is holding a long poled fishing net.  A variety of trees including the two distinctive curling palms. There is a butterfly or moth border pattern.

There are no maker's marks. The bowl measures 8 9/16 inches (21.8 cm) diameter and stands 2 inches (5 cm) high. It weighs 418 grammes unpacked. It is in excellent antique condition with glaze crazing, spur marks to the inside and foot of the bowl and minor marking commensurate with age and use. No chips, cracks nor restoration. Please see the images.

This is a beautiful and excellent example of early 19th century blue and white transferware of the Georgian period from the highly regarded maker - Job Ridgway. A great item for display or for use.
