Large Antique Porcelain Platter Transferware Chinoiserie Harbour Scene pattern circa 1820 18th century Qing Chinese Style 56 cm long 41 cm wide 3.7 kg

A rare, extremely large (22 inches or 56 cm long) porcelain Chinese inspired famille rose platter decorated with a Chinese landscape and figures in the early 18th century style of the Yongzheng and early Qianlong eras but, believed to date from the early 19th century. The pattern has an assigned name of Chinoiserie Harbour Scene. (ref 1)

The platter is of rectangular shape with canted corners and has a figural scene with several groups of people standing on the bank of a river or estuary with sailing boats or sampans in the background. There are several trees, buildings and recumbent oxen, as well as islands, mountains in the distance and flocks of geese in flight.

On the right hand side of the scene there is a group of larger figures in more ornate dress and all are wearing the Qing dynasty Mandarin officials hats or Qingdai guanmao (Chinese: 清代官帽). The tallest figure with long beard is wearing a yellow and purple robe - yellow being a colour usually reserved for Royalty or the Emperor. One of the Mandarins appear to be explaining to this group the scene that they see before them.

This highly collectable and attractive example of hand coloured brown transfer printed porcelain dating from Georgian period around 1820 during the reign of George III. The maker is currently unknown but, most probably from Staffordshire, England in the United Kingdom.  It is decorated in a Chinese style of the Qianlong era of the 18th century. This meat plate, platter or ashet is made from good quality porcelain with a fine bright white body and very crisp printing and fine quality neat hand enameling. The plate has a busy brightly coloured floral and scroll work border painted with birds around the rim with gilded highlights.

The platter has a low glazed foot rim and is typically not marked. There are no maker's marks. The plate measures 22 inches (56 cm) by 16 inches (41 cm) wide, stands 1 13/16 inches ( 4.7 cm) high and weighs 3.7 kilograms unpacked.

It is in very good antique condition with no chips nor restoration however, there are two cracks to the rim probably from plate hangers one on the top left and lower right corners, some glaze crazing and associated minor discolouration. The base has been ground to make it sit flat on the table, as it has warped in the kiln at manufacture, there still is a slight rock to the base. Please see the images, which includes one showing the translucency of the porcelain body.

This is a beautiful, rare, highly decorative and very large excellent example of British hand coloured transferware of the early 19th century. A great item for display or use.
