A superb example of an Edwardian silver locket with a silver plated book chain. This is a great looking item of antique jewellery - a silver and enamel locket hallmarked for Birmingham 1908 -1909 with a silver plated ornate design book chain.
The 2 1/2 inches long locket - including the bale - is oval shaped and has a central enamelled plaque featuring a tranquil seascape of sailing yachts, so a perfect item for any sailor! Surrounding the enamelled centre is an ornate embossed design, repeated on the back of the locket.
The locket is hinged and opens and closes with a positive snap. Inside is the Birmingham hallmark for 1908 - 1909 and the maker's monogram is J.G, possibly Joseph Gloster or James Griffiths.
There is also a lion mark on the back of the bale, indicating silver. The 17.5 inches long fancy link chain has a fretted or pierced design and a large free-swivelling bolt ring which fastens the chain as well as holding the locket. It all weighs 29.9 grammes unpacked.
The locket and chain are in very good antique condition, ready to wear.
