Antique Late Georgian Engraved Clear Glass Centre-piece Comport or Compote circa 1830 Large Saucer shaped bowl 10 inches diameter 8 inches high
A large and impressive looking antique blown glass centrepiece, comport or compote dating from circa 1830. This beautiful saucer shaped footed bowl has a plain foot measuring 5 3/4 inches in diameter and a knopped stem. The dish or bowl is 10 inches in diameter and has been hand engraved with an attractive pattern around the rim featuring diamonds, stars and frosted thumb cuts within connected panels.
The centrepiece stands 8 inches high and is perfect for holding fruit, cake or sweetmeats, for example. It would look stunning at the centre of a dining table and is a decorative item for both display and use.
The glass has the distinctive slightly greyish hue of antique glass and there is a polished pontil to the base and the amount of wear to the footrim you would expect to see with an antique item of glassware for the table. The centrepiece is in very good condition with some minor surface scratching commensurate with age and use and some inclusions or frits in the body of the glass, dating from manufacture.
The centrepiece weighs 1211g so is a heavy and substantial piece of glass. It rings beautifully when tapped with the finger.
Please see my other antique glassware for the table also listed for sale.
