A decorative brass hinged lidded inkwell and pen stand decorated with a Neo Rococo scroll pattern in the Rococo Revival style - as part of the Gothic Revival Movement in the mid Victorian period circa 1870 in the mid 19th century.
This is a good quality ink well with ceramic liner, with main elements are made from a cast brass lid and ink well holder with an ornate pierced cast outer ring. It all sits in a pressed brass body and base held together with a machine screw stud on the base of ink well holder and a brass nut to the base.
The ink well measures externally 6 inches diameter (15 cm) at the rim, 2 inches ( 5 cm) high and 3 1/8 inches ( 8 cm) overall height to the top of the knop on the lid. It weighs 426 grammes unpacked.
This lovely inkwell is in good antique condition with the usual minor marks and signs of use. There are two stable short cracks to the underside on the pressed brass base where it locates on the underside of the cast brass outer ring. Please see the images.
It would make a great addition to any desk, side table, mantelpiece, or bedroom cabinet. A useful and decorative item.
