Antique Oval Plate Blue & White Transferware Domestic Scenery Patt S & J Burton
A highly decorative and collectable antique blue and white transfer ware oval dish, plate or stand. It has a printed mark on the back with the name of the pattern, Domestic Scenery and the makers monogram S and J B - Samuel and John Burton - forming part of the stamp. This factory was in production from 1832-45 in New Street, Hanley, Staffordshire Potteries, England. The factory was formerly run by James Keeling.
We are unsure of what its purpose would have been but it was possibly a stand for a sauce tureen. The transfer printed pattern shows a charming scene with a woman and child by a lake and a house in the background. There is a floral printed border.
The plate measures 7 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches and weighs 227g. It is in good antique condition with just a tiny glaze chip at the rim and a little glaze rubbing at the rim. This is a nice example of antique blue and white transfer ware by a short-lived factory - ideal to add to any collection.
