Antique Pair Bohemian Green Uranium Opaque Glass Vases Gilded Decoration circa 1860 - footed inverted baluster shape body - long flared trumpet neck
A very elegant pair of antique circa 1860 uranium opaline glass vases, probably Bohemian. The vases are a stunning apple or jade green colour and have a footed inverted baluster shape body and a long flared trumpet neck.
The vases are hand blown and vary a little in size - one is fractionally taller than the other at 27.5 cm and 27 cm. They have been decorated with hand gilding with a classical design of swags and tassel-like droppers around the body and below the neck rim. They also have gilded bands at the bases, stems, shoulders and neck.
When a UV light is shone onto the vases, they clearly show that they are made of uranium glass with its distinctive fluorescence, please see the last image. Uranium was first used to colour glass in the 1830's. Both vases have the gold painted number 106 on the bases.
The vases are in good antique condition with one vase having lost more of the gilding than its mate. Together they weigh 968 grammes and they are a very decorative pair to enhance any interior.
