A lovely antique, highly decorative square shaped vegetable tureen, dating from circa 1835 - 1840 and transfer printed in blue and white with the willow pattern.
The tureen has two integral handles and the lid has an attractive shell scroll finial. The tureen has an impressed mark on the base, looks like an ornate scrolled letter D. We have not been able to attribute it to a particular factory but it was probably produced by one of the Staffordshire factories of the day. The glaze at the foot rim of the tureen base shows the distinctive blueish pooled glaze of pearlware.
The tureen stands approx 7 inches high with its lid on and is 10 1/4 inches wide. It weighs 1178g and is in good condition with just a couple of short, tight hairlines to an inner corner of the lid, a little body crazing and minor fritting to the outside of the base and around the rim, dating from manufacture.
This is a very nice item of antique early to mid 19th century, William IV or early Victorian period pearlware for display or use.
