Antique Porcelain Gaudy Welsh Hand Painted Cup & Saucer Buckle Patt c 1830 -1840

Antique Porcelain Gaudy Welsh Hand Painted Cup & Saucer c 1830 -1840 Buckle Pattern

Here we have a lovely antique porcelain gaudy welsh cup and saucer dating from around 1830 - 40. The cup and saucer has been beautifully hand painted with an intricate and detailed design - referred to as the buckle pattern - in underglaze blue, iron red and orange and with pink or Sunderland lustre and gilded detailing.

Although referred to as the buckle pattern, the design in the centre is actually a planter or plant pot with flowers emanating from it but the square design resemble a belt or shoe buckle.

There are no maker's marks as is usually the case with items such as this dating from this period. The cup stands 2 1/2 inches high and is 3 5/8ths inches across the rim. The saucer has a diameter of 5 1/2 inches. Together they weigh 238g unpacked. Both pieces are in very good order with just very minor wear to the pink lustre highlights commensurate with age and use.

This is a lovely cup and saucer to add to any collection of gaudy welsh and a very decorative display piece.
