Rockingham Brown Treacle Glazed Toby Jug The Snuff Taker Antique 19th century - Yorkshire Pottery modelled as a Georgian figure 24cm h, base 12cm dia

An antique pottery Toby jug decorated with a mottled Rockingham type treacle glaze giving it a great rustic look. This jug is moulded in a shape known as "The Snuff Taker", a popular character and habit from the earlier 18th century Georgian period. The jug has a deep lustrous Rockingham treacle glaze which has been deliberately unevenly applied to give the mottled effect.

The figure is modelled a standing pot bellied fellow, dressed in a tricorn hat, a Georgian frock coat and a waistcoat that cannot be buttoned as his capacious belly holds it apart. He is wearing knee length breeches and stockings. He holds a snuff box in his left hand and has a pinch of snuff in his right. His roundish face is well modelled with a large bulbous nose and cheery grin.

There are no maker's marks as is usual with this type of ware but it was probably produced either by Rockingham or one the factories in the Yorkshire area, they were popular during the period from 1840 to 1900.

It is in good antique condition with three small disguised chips to the rim.

It is an attractive, amusing and collectable pottery Toby jug. The dimensions are approximately 9 1/2 inches (24 cm) high and stands on a roughly circular base 4 3/4 inches ( 12 cm ) diameter. It weighs 1211 grammes unpacked.
