Antique Royal Doulton Lambeth Sam Weller Figurine H 23 Leslie Harradine
A rare, buff coloured slip cast stoneware figurine of Sam Weller modelled by Leslie Harradine in 1912 for Royal Doulton at Lambeth. The base of the is figure is impressed with the model number H 23 incised with Leslie Harradine's initials L H and is also impressed ft as well as Royal Doulton, Lambeth, England and the four conjoined D symbol mark
This is a very well observed model - the figurine depicts the fictional character of Sam Weller from Charles Dickens first successful novel published in 1837 - Pickwick Papers. Sam is modelled, standing wearing a waistcoat, neckerchief and tall brimless hat, he has a boot in in left hand, raised with one leg upon a plinth and with a polishing brush in his right hand . The folds and creases to his clothing enhance the shape and the illusion of movement. There is a small area of brown glazing to the plinth and the boot being polished.
Leslie Harradine (1887-1965) became an apprentice in the Doulton Lambeth studio in 1902 and worked under George Tinworth while studying part-time at the Camberwell School of Arts. He worked in the Royal Doulton design department for a while but left and then eventually worked as a freelance designer for Doulton sending his designs to Charles Noke the art Director. Leslie Harradine supplied Doulton with his designs until the late 1950's.
This lovely rare antique Doulton Lambeth figurine is in fair antique condition, the figure has broken in the past and has been restored. Small chip to the base at the back. This figure displays well and the condition is taken into account in the price.
