Antique Samuel Keeling & Co Part Dessert Service hand coloured transfer printed in the Pagoo Pattern number 303 circa 1836 - 6 round 1 square
A very attractive antique part dessert service dating from the mid 1830s and made by the renowned makers, Samuel Keeling & Co. of Market Street, Hanley, Staffordshire. They operated from 1836 until 1850.
There are six round 91/4 inch diameter plates and one square bread or cake plate with a diameter of 10 1/4 inches. All are marked on the back with the impressed mark within a lozenge, S K & Co New Stone. There is also a blue printed mark with the pattern name, Pagoo and S K and Co. There is also a hand painted pattern number, 303.Â
The plates are highly decorative and have a chinoiserie theme with the Chinese inspired design of planters, flowers and foliage printed in underglaze cobalt blue and hand coloured in iron red, peach and green with opulent gilded highlighting. The central design is bordered by a deep band of printed geometric motifs with hand coloured detailing and gilded highlights. This in turn is set against an outer border of deep red or crimson with a brown rim. The overall result is very attractive and they would make lovely display items.
The plates are in generally very good order with four of them having small chips to the footrims. There is some glaze crazing and discolouration to some of the plates and a little glaze chipping to the brown rims, commensurate with age and use. The set weighs 4030g.
