Antique Sevres Type French Porcelain Ormolu Candlestick Hand Painted Cupid 1860
Beautiful antique French porcelain candlestick with ormolu base and nozzle dating from around 1860. This is a stunning example of high quality French porcelain that is unmarked but possibly by the renowned factory of Sevres. The candlestick has a pear shaped porcelain body that has been very skilfully hand painted and gilded. There is a crosshatch gilded pattern on a cream coloured background and ornately gilded cartouche with a pastel coloured scene of a cherub with an arrow (possibly Cupid) and flowers. There are gilded sprays at either side of the cartouche and another at the back.
The porcelain section is fixed to an ornate three legged base or stand made of gilded bronze - ormolu - or possibly brass. The sconce has a detachable nozzle which has been wrapped inside with black tape at some point to keep it secure.
The candlestick stands approx 6 3/8ths inches or 16 cms high and the base is 3 3/4 inches/ 9.5 cms wide. It weighs 260g and is in good antique condition with a slight lean forwards and a tiny gilded over frit in the body at one of the sprays near the central cartouche. One lower joint on one of the legs has be glued. There is a little flaking to the gilding at the sconce. This is a very decorative item for display and use.
