Antique Treen Wooden & Iron Banded Coopered Staved
Canteen Barrel Keg Mid 19thC
Here we have a very attractive and highly decorative mid 19th century carved coopered and staved canteen barrel with blacksmith iron banding. It has two wooden feet to prevent it from rolling, there is a wooden plug in the filler hole and a cork in the inset brass pouring spout.
A barrel or canteen such as this would have been filled with
water, spirits, beer or ale and would have been used onboard a horse drawn
cart, carriage or wagon, even could have been used on a ship or barge or boat
whilst travelling. It would look great
in a farmhouse type kitchen or any where as a great conversation piece.
The barrel is very good antique condition. There is an inset brass pouring spout on the
lower top of the staved edge and a strengthened filling hole with a wooden plug
in the top. The barrel has two wrought iron blacksmith made bands.
Stands 13 1/2" diameter and 6 3/8" wide overall height 16 " to
top of plug. Weighs 3174g unpacked. The canteen is in very good condition with
marks and knocks from use, it also has great colour and patination. Probably
Great 19th Century piece perfect for a military re-enactment
groups, farmhouse kitchen, breweriana, Revolutionary War Collection or
Collection of Original Colonial Period Antiques.
