Italian Tuscan repousse copper & brass mezzina water carrier circa 1900 - Arts & Crafts decorated with Cockatrice or Basilisks & acanthus leaf scrolls
A highly decorative and very stylish antique arts and crafts period, circa 1900, embossed and repousse decorated copper Italian water carrier or mezzina with applied brass carrying handle, lid, bird's head spout and foot. This very attractive antique copper and brass mezzina has been hand decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves, cockatrice or basilisk and cock's heads in a typically arts and crafts or art nouveau style.
This beautifully made item in a typical regional footed round baluster shape with a fixed loop handle, tightly fitting lid and bird or serpent head spout . It was made by an highly skilled artisan in the Tuscan, Emilia and Romagna region of central Italy in the late 19th to early 20th century. The quality of the craftmanship is very high and it probably came from a well to do household.
The mezzina stands approximately 13 inches (33 cm) high and is approx 7 5/8 inches (19.5 cm) diameter overall length 8 7/8 inches (22.5 cm). It weighs 1230 grammes unpacked and has a capacity over over 6 pints or about 3.5 litres. Sadly there currently is a small weep to the brazing at the base with the foot however, this could be easily overcome, if so desired, with an application of some form of sealant such as silicone.
It is very good antique condition with a small dent to the back of the shoulder a few minor dents to the body and lid of the mezzina, commensurate with age and use. This is a great-looking item and ideal for any collector of antique copper ware, kitchenalia, Italian metalware or interior decorator. A highly decorative and stylish object for any interior.
