Antique Victorian 15ct Gold Locket Book Chain Necklace Padlock Etruscan Revival
A superb item of antique 19th century grand period Victorian gold jewellery - a most attractive 15ct gold chain (unmarked but tests as such) book chain or locket chain necklace with an 18ct gold bloomed finish or wash. A high carat wash was a fashionable feature of the 1860 -1880 period when Etruscan Revival was a popular design influence for jewellers.
The chain is made up of 1 inch long hollow rectangular box shaped links each with a pierced stylised flower design of three flowers per face, with eight decorative bobbles or applied balls, four to each edge. The 9ct gold padlock is a later addition and has a full hallmark for Birmingham 1908 - 09.
The chain is 19.5 inches long and was originally made to be worn as a book chain or locket chain. It weighs 27.4 grammes and the padlock is 2.5 grammes.
It is a high quality item and in very good condition. Very minor dent to one of panels, one ring is slightly larger than the others is 9 carat gold and padlock is a later addition also 9 carat. On the end of the edge of one of the rectangular links there is a a small lightly filed area that a previous owner has used to acid test the gold quality. Please see the images.
The chain looks absolutely stunning when worn and this is a substantial and very decorative antique chain and a rare find.
