Antique Victorian 18 carat Yellow Gold Mounted Hand Carved Shell Cameo Brooch circa 1860
Antique mid -19th century high relief hand carved shell cameo brooch in an 18 carat yellow gold mount. Here we have a delightful item of Victorian era cameo jewellery, most likely brought back from Italy by a British traveller on the Grand Tour circa 1860.
The brooch is approx 3.5 cm or 1 3/8 inches long and the cameo shows a classical profile of a lady with curls falling onto her shoulder. The coral is mostly cream or ivory in colour with soft pink shading to one side. The carver's mark is scratched onto the back of the cameo.
The mount or frame is made of 18 ct yellow gold - unmarked but tests as such and this has attractive filigree band or ribbon effect detail and a rope twist edge. The frame has suffered some denting of the edges over the years, but this does not significantly detract from the overall look of this very pretty item.
The brooch has a long pin that fastens very securely to a c-shaped catch and the brooch is ready to wear. It weighs 8.8 grammes. A beautiful item to add to any collection of Victorian era jewellery or cameos.
