A great looking item of antique Victorian jewellery - a beautiful and highly versatile desirable continental silver (800) book chain necklace and locket or pendant dropper chain with its two original free swiveling bolt ring clasps. This aesthetic movement continental silver book chain necklace dates from the 19th century during the reign of Queen Victoria circa 1870 - 80.
It has a soldered rope twist link with equi-spaced applied small silver balls, beads or bobbles on one side along the full length of the chain. The ends of the chain each have a large soldered oval ring, one of which is stamped "800". The two ends are connected with a large bolt ring clasp from which drops a short similarly constructed pendant dropper chain extension but with the exception of having small silver balls soldered onto each side. At the end of this dropper extension chain is another slightly smaller bolt ring clasp from which a pendant or locket could be attached. The clasps of course are interchangeable and can be worn at either end of the extension chain.
The bolt rings allow the wearer to add their own pendant or locket as would have been 'de rigueur' at the time it was made. This is a style of chain that is very classic to the period, although it transcends time to be a perfect style for the modern day. Easy to wear and a statement on the neck too!
A pendant or locket could be separated from this collar necklace and the chain could be worn on its own. With the pendant or locket removed, one of the bolt ring clasps could be worn hidden at the back or with the bolt ring clasp at the front in the centre. A stunning and versatile antique necklace.
If you are collector of antique Victorian collars or book chains or necklaces, you will appreciate how unusual it is to find a collar with the extra extension piece.
