Antique Victorian Aesthetic Movement Large Silver Locket and Chain 1886 Snowdrop
A superb example of a Victorian silver locket, fully hallmarked and dating from 1886 - 87, the height of the aesthetic movement period.
The locket has a maker's mark of J W and the assay office mark is for Birmingham so we think the maker is probably J. Walker. The oval shaped locket is 2 inches long, including the chain ring and is beautifully made with lots of lovely design detail. The Chain and pendant weigh a total of 21.4 grammes unpacked
The locket has little decorative balls around the outer edge and the front has bright cut engraving and a raised central section with vermicelli engraving and an applied floral motif - it appears to be a snowdrop flower, judging by the leaves.
The interior has a glazed compartment (replacement plastic) with the original frame to hold it in place. The locket closes with a positive snap and is in very good order throughout with just a little very minor surface scratching and a very faint crease at the back, commensurate with age and wear. The 18 inches long silver belcher chain is a modern addition but complements the locket well.
This is a lovely item and a very wearable piece of Victorian jewellery.
