Antique Victorian Whitby Jet Elasticated Panel Bracelet Large Size 8 inches internal circumference circa 1880

A superb antique Victorian Whitby jet hand carved elasticated panel bracelet dating from circa 1880 in the late 19th century.

This lovely bracelet is suitable for a large wrist - it has an internal circumference of 8 inches. It could be reduced in size by the removal of a few panels and re-knotting the black elastic.

The bracelet has long rectangular panels approximately 1 1/4 inches (3.2 cm) long by approximately 3/8 ths inch (0.95 cm) wide, although as they are hand carved, they do vary a little in width. The convex or domed panels have been carved with diamond shapes that catch the light when worn, giving extra interest.

The bracelet is in good condition, ready to wear with a chip to the corner of one panel and a chip to the back of its neighbour. There are several very minor nicks to corners and edges - all commensurate with age and wear. It weighs 42 grammes unpacked.

This is a lovely example of antique Victorian Whitby jet jewellery, probably produced originally to be worn as an item of mourning jewellery. Queen Victorian wore a great deal of Whitby jet pieces during her mourning period for Prince Albert, making this type of jewellery very fashionable.
