Antique Victorian Whitby Jet Lovers Knot Brooch Naturalistic Carved Large c 1870
Beautiful antique, circa 1870, large size Whitby jet brooch carved into an open naturalistic knot, sometimes referred to as a lover's knot. The carved, sinuous form reminds me of branches either of a tree or coral but it has a beautifully tactile look.
The brooch is a good size at a little under 2 3/4 inches or 7 cm long and it has been very skilfully made by hand. Queen Victoria made jet jewellery extremely popular in Victorian Britain after the death of her much-loved husband, Prince Albert in 1861.
The brooch has a silver coloured long pin and a c-catch to which it fastens very securely. It is in good condition and ready to wear - a really lovely item of Victorian jet jewellery.
