An antique Georgian - Regency period Wedgwood "Rosso Antico" externally unglazed dry bodied red stoneware teapot in a low round shape decorated with hand painted enamel flowers, dating from around 1820. For similar items see (ref.1)Â
This antique dry bodied redware, internally glazed, teapot is decorated in the Chinese Yixing Begonia style of the Kangxi period (1662-1722) (Ref. 2) Â although this teapot dates to the early 19th century. See a similarly decorated Wedgwood pot in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Ref.3).
The teapot is in a turned low round "Egyptian" shape with a slightly domed lid with button or mushroom finial that has a vent hole through the middle. There is a flat topped "7" shaped handle and an internally domed strainer with 15 pierced holes.
This teapot was made in the factory originally owned by Josiah Wedgwood, Wedgwood of Etruria, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England. The base is impress marked Wedgwood. This is a very decorative and collectable piece of antique redware stoneware dating from the early 19th century circa 1820 - in the Georgian period. There is an old collection label to the base dating it to circa 1815.Â
The teapot is in good antique condition with a stabilised crack to the shoulder of the body to the left of the spout. commensurate with the age and use. No chips nor other restoration. Â Please see the images.
