A beautiful and highly collectable large Scottish Wemyss Ware tankard, decorated with hand painted cherries, in the very distinctive and attractive tones of Robert Heron and son. It dates to the late Victorian era circa 1900.
This large tankard, which has a capacity of approximately two pints, has been hand painted with red cherries on branched stems. There is a green rim and decoration on the back of the handle. This lovely tankard has the Wemyss impressed mark on the base with underglaze green enamel highlighting, as well as the retailers mark of T. Goode and Co. of South Audley Street, London W1 which is printed in blue.
Wemyss Ware was founded in 1882 as a collaboration between Fife Pottery, Kirkcaldy owner, Robert Heron and Czech designer, Karel Nikola. They took the name of Wemyss from the Wemyss family who were great patrons of their work.
This lovely example dates from circa 1900 and it is in very good condition with the usual glaze crazing and a very tiny disguised nick to the rim. The mug stands 5 3/4 inches ( 14 .7 cm) high and is 4 3/8 inches (11.1 cm ) diameter, and 6 1/2 inches ( 16.5 cm) long across the handle. It weighs 487 grammes unpacked.
The tankard would make a great addition to any collection of antique pottery or Wemyss ware and is a stunning display piece.
