A superb Victorian circa 1870 cameo brooch made of hand carved pale coloured shell set in a Whitby jet mount or frame. 

The oval shaped brooch is 1 1/2 inches long by 1 3/8th inches wide and has a brass back plate with secure pin and c-catch.

The cameo has been beautifully hand carved in high relief with exquisite detail. It shows a classical female head in profile - the Goddess Flora. Her face and hair are well depicted and she has a garland of flowers resting on her head. with a loose tendril or ringlet tumbling onto her neck.

The cameo has a pale pinkish hue background with the carving in white. The cameo is set in a Whitby jet surround which perfectly complements the shell. 

This is a great example of Victorian era cameo jewellery.  No doubt the unmounted cameo was brought back the UK from Italy possibly as a Grand Tour and then mounted in the quintessentially English material, Whitby jet. A quality item and a very wearable piece. It is in excellent condition with just a couple of very minor nicks to the rim of the jet mount.
