A very attractive and useful dessert service in the Clarendon shape, decorated with pattern number 1096, made by William Ridgway, son and Co, dating from circa 1840 - during the early Victorian era in the mid nineteenth century. William Ridgway son and Co operated from The Church Works, High Street, Hanley, Stoke on Trent, in Staffordshire England, from 1838 until 1848.

The service consist of fourteen pieces, each are made of a grey green glazed earthenware decorated with a puce floral transfer printed band which is highlighted with white, orange and pink enamels. Additionally there is gilding around the centre, rim base and moulding. 

The largest item is a twin handled round low relief moulded comport or centrepiece with a lobed square shaped pedestal stem with a petaled decorative skirt.. This piece stands approx 7 3/8 inches (18.7 cm) high, is 13 3/8 inches ( 33.7 cm) long and 11 1/4 inches (28.6 cm) wide. Some American collectors may refer to this as a compote or a fruit bowl. One handle has been broken and glued back into place. Some wear to the gilding. Weighs 1441 grammes unpacked.

The rectangular shaped dish or plate is 11 1/2 inches long and 9 1/8 inches ( 29.2 cm) wide and has integral handles. There is some wear to the gilding and three small chips underside the rim of this plate. Weighs 675 grammes unpacked.

The two square shaped footed dishes or plates are 10 5/8 inches (27 cm) long and 9 3/4 inches (24.7 cm) wide and has integral handles. There is some wear to the gilding and a small chip underside the rim of each plate. they weigh 1244 grammes unpacked.

There are four leaf shaped serving dishes with integral handles and and these are approximately 10 3/4 inches (27.4 cm) long by 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide. Three have small chips to the underside of the rims, there is some wear to the gilding. They weigh 2030 grammes unpacked.

The six round scalloped plates are 9 1/8 inches (23.2 cm) diameter. There is some wear to the gilding, two have no damage and four have a  small chip under the rims of these four two also have a chip to the upper rim. They weigh 2521 grammes unpacked.

Together, the set weighs 5.4 kg unpacked. A great, most attractive antique dessert set for both display and or for use.
