Art Deco Italian Silver Novelty Hand Mirror Shaped Compact Lipstick Holder 1950s
Italian 800 grade silver hand mirror shaped compact dating from around the 1950's made in Florence, the capital of Italy's Tuscany region This highly sought after and collectable compact in the shape of a hand mirror. It is stamped on the inside with 800 for the grade of silver and another lozenge mark 242 FI and in the pan of the compact, 39.
The lozenge mark identifies the silversmith, the mark 242 FI is that of F.LLI FOSSI S.d.f. of 175 Via N. da Uzzano, FIRENZE the mark was first entered on 20/06/1952 and they were still active at 31/12/1971. See the excellent website www.silvercollection.it/SILVERSMITHSFI2.
The compact has a mirror on the outside - slightly foxed - and another inside. The handle has a pull out lipstick holder - such a clever design and a really charming item. There is no lipstick but the slider and carrier are there for one to be fitted. Neither is there any powder nor puff.
The whole of the silver outer is heavily engraved with rococo style foliate scrolls and geometric motifs. There is a flower motif to the base of the handle.
The compact is 5 5/8 ths inches or 15 cms long and it weighs 90g. This is a superb item for any collector and it is in very good order throughout with just the slight foxing or cloudiness to the outer mirror. The compact opens and closes with a positive snap and the lipstick holder is a good tight fit.
