Art Deco Jakob Bengel Brickwork or Mauerwerk Articulated Long Necklace Red Black Enamels 1920

Here we have a very stylish and highly collectable item of art deco or machine age jewellery dating from the 1920s to the early 1930s. This articulated, chrome plated brickwork necklace was made by the renowned German costume jewellery maker, Jakob Bengel. It is also known as Mauerwerk necklace.

This is a documented design and bears the word Garantie at the clasp, as is the case with many Bengel pieces. The industrial type design features a 43cm long 1cm wide chain picked out with red and black enamels. Suspended from this is an integral kite or tie shaped dropper measuring 11 cm long, including the top ring, and with a maximum width of 3.5cm. This dropper has chevron design alternating black and red enamel bands.

Jakob Bengel was a chain and costume jewellery factory founded by him in 1873 in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. In the 1920s and 30s. It became one of the leading manufacturers of fashion jewellery in the Art Deco style. Inspired by the Bauhaus and Machine Age design movement a well as French Avant-Garde styles, Bengel moved towards experimental jewellery combining brass and chrome in geometric shapes. Bengel pieces were paraded on the catwalk at the fashion shows of influential designers such as Coco Chanel.

The necklace fastens securely with a bolt ring clasp and the necklace weighs 63.4g. It is in good condition, ready to wear, with very minor marking to the chrome finish and just a little loss to the black and red enamel decoration. Can be worn with either the decorated side on show or the plain side, giving it greater versatility.

This is a great opportunity to add a very stylish example of Jakob Bengel jewellery to your collection.
