Art Nouveau Barbotine Majolica Vase French Antique c 1890 Possibly Pointu Square shaped with applied Roses decoration Majolica Glazed
A very decorative antique art nouveau french barbotine majolica square sectioned bulging rectangular shaped vase, unmarked but possibly made by the renowned and highly collected maker, Jean-Marie Pointu (1843 - 1925).
The vase has high or gros relief applied pink and yellow roses and leaves on a mottled and graduated brown and green glaze background. There are two faux ring handles to the front and back with low relief oak leaf decoration.
Item condition: good antique condition, although there is some damage and losses to the the petals and leaves, particularly the yellow rose, as is often the case with this ware. There is a chip to the foot where the glaze has pooled and has been knocked off possibly dating from manufacture during removal from the kiln. This is still a very decorative and sought after item for any collector and could benefit from restoration if so desired.
The vase has a painted number 64 to the base and dates from around 1890.
