Arts and Crafts Benham Froud Spirit Kettle Wrought Iron Stand C Dresser c 1890
A highly decorative and stylish antique arts and crafts period spirit kettle and wrought iron stand, This very attractive copper and brass kettle with spirit heater and weighted stabilising ball all fitting onto a black wrought iron stand, in a typically arts and crafts or art nouveau style.
This beautifully made item was made by Benham and Froud of Chandos Street, London and dates from around 1885 - 1890. The base of the kettle has faint marks - the orb and three diamonds mark of this renowned makers. The kettle has been well polished over the years, so the marks are fairly difficult to see, but visible when viewing with an eyeglass. Benham and Froud used the orb mark as they made the cross on top of St Paul's Dome in 1821, visible from their shop.
The design is attributed to the arts and crafts / art nouveau designer, Dr Christopher Dresser and the very modern looking shape of the tri footed kettle is very typical of his style. The copper kettle has three brass feet and a plain brass handle. It has a wooden knob which has a split in it - see images. The kettle stands 9 1/4 inches high and is approx 8 3/4 inches wide.
The kettle sits on two little hooks at the top of the black wrought iron stand which has decorative curls to the three feet and either side of the holder for the copper burner. There is a hook in the centre of the foot stand where a weighted copper ball fits to ensure the stand's stability. Overall, the stand is 33 inches high and the item in its entirety weighs 5.55 kg.
It is very good antique condition with the repaired wooden knob, as previously mentioned and a few minor dents to the body of the kettle, commensurate with age and use. This is a great-looking item and ideal for any collector. A very decorative object for any interior.
