Bohemian Milk Glass Spirit Flask Enamelled Floral Swags Antique circa 1740 George II period Flat Rectangular Shaped with Canted Corners 12.9 cm High
A George II period, circa 1740, mid 18th century antique Bohemian milk glass (milch glass) or opaque white glass spirit flask enamelled with floral scrolls. The decanter is made of opaque white blown glass and has been formed by being mould blown in a dip or optic mould. The flask is made in a flattened rectangular shape with canted corners. The base has wear to the high points around the edges commensurate with an item of this age. It also has a rough or snapped pontil mark .
The neck has an applied pewter ring for a stopper now missing. The neck spigot for the stopper has been inserted into the box blown moulded body. There is an old collection label to the base that identifies this as early Bristol however, we do not think that this is correct. We believe it to be Bohemian circa 1730 - 1750. ( Ref 1)
It is in excellent antique condition, there are tooling marks, bubbles and inclusions within the body. The stopper is missing. There is some minor wear to the enamelling. The shape of this flask makes it quite sturdy they were often made to be used whilst travelling.
This is a lovely antique continental glass item to add to any collection and a very decorative display piece.
