Antique Large Spongeware Spatterware Low Bowl 19th C Possibly Scottish folk art style - deep purple border with black print & central floral 37 cm D
A lovely example of highly collectable and decorative sponge-ware or spatter-ware pottery, probably made in Scotland and dating from circa 1890 -1900.
This great looking low bowl is 14.5 inches (37 cm) wide stands approx 2 3/8 inches high. It is made of earthenware and has been hand decorated in a naïve, folk art style featuring a deep purple border with a black printed border and a central floral motif in crimson and green.
The bowl weighs 1702g and is in good antique condition with a hairline crack to the centre and a couple of hairlines at the rim. There is glaze crazing and a little discolouration commensurate with age and use. This is a very attractive item of spongeware that would look great in the centre of a table, dresser or sideboard.
