Carved Gnome Bottle Stopper Cork Brienz or Black Forest Antique Walnut
An unusual antique carved walnut bottle stopper depicting a dejected looking gnome kneeling on one leg assessing a broken wine bottle at his foot. This gnome has finely and naturalistically hand carved features including his large bushy beard, finely featured face and hands and clothing.
These carved wooden items are often called Black Forest and are attributed to Germany however, we think that this is Swiss, late nineteenth century to early 20th Century, (circa 1900) from Brienz, a small village in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland region.
He is in very good antique condition, with a small chip to the front bottom rim and loss to the bottom of his cork. No other damage or restoration, in otherwise great original and usable condition and with a lovely patina. This is a great collector's piece with an unusual novelty gnome carving
