Chinese Canton Celadon Green Plate Hand Painted Bird, Butterfly and flowers 19th C Antique
An antique 19th century Chinese celadon green porcelain plate that has been hand painted in bright enamel colours with a bird, probably a Chinese Pheasant, a brightly coloured butterfly, peony rose flowers and fruits. The back is marked in under glaze blue with an stylised six character seal type mark. The plate dates from around 1880.
The Canton (Guangzhou) region of China was noted for decorating rather than manufacturing of porcelain. Enamelling began in the early 18th century and the completed items were usually transported to Europe as a secondary cargo onboard tea clippers of the East India companies. Their weight served as ballast for the voyage and gave the merchants another profitable product line along with the tea.
It is in good antique condition with a little wear to the gilding and enamel, the gilded rim may have been retouched, there is a small chip to the foot and some of the usual minor fritting. No other chips cracks nor restoration. Please see the images.
This is a lovely item to add to any collection of antique 19th century Chinese celadon ware or antique Chinese porcelain.
