Antique Chinese porcelain crackle glaze vase blue & white 19th C - Hand painted Island temple & bridge pattern brown etched rim Chenghua mark 26 cm H

An antique Chinese porcelain cylindrical or sleeve vase hand painted in under-glaze blue with a continuous island temple and bridge pattern. This is a nice example of Chinese export porcelain often termed crackle glazed ware. The vase is of a straight sided cylindrical shape with a flared or trumpet rim. The vase has been thrown by hand, on the inside there are ridges created by the potter's fingers when drawing up the wet clay to form the body.

The decoration consists of a large temple that takes up most of the land mass of an island. There are two figures in the central doorway and pine trees and willows in the background. The island is surrounded by water, each end of the island stretches round the sides of the vase towards the back. On the back of the vase the two ends of the island are connected with a bridge!  There are boats, willow trees and birds and above the bridge in the distance are large cloud covered mountains.

The rim and base have bands of brown etching with stylised waves to the base and leaf and scale ground to the rim. The base has a brown etched mark - 成化年制 - Chenghua Nian Zhi. This mark is apocryphal and the vase dates from the late 19th century around 1890. Guangxu - 光緒 - was the Emperor on the throne at this time during the Qing dynasty 清代 .

It is in very good antique condition without chips cracks nor restoration except for a small crack to the top edges of the etching to the brown edged foot towards the back of the vase. The glaze is crackled and there are some hairlines to the glaze on the inside of the rim the crackles have some brown discolouration this effect is deliberate on the part of the potter. Please see the images.

This is a lovely item to add to any collection of a Chinese blue and white, crackle glaze, brown etched rim ware or antique porcelain or ceramics.
