Chinese Porcelain Famille Rose Medallion Chamberstick and Snuffer Mid 19th C
Chinese export porcelain antique Canton hand painted famille rose medallion pattern chamberstick and snuffer. This is a relatively rare item, particularly as it still has the original candle snuffer, which is usually missing whenever a candlestick such as this is found.
This chamber stick dates from the 19th century around 1850. Xianfeng 咸豐帝 was the Emperor on the throne at this time in the Qing 清代 dynasty.
The round circular base has an integral short columnar nozzle with a wide drip tray rim. The handle is a moulded circular or ring shape with decorative scrolls to the bottom. There is a rounded tapering cone shaped snuffer retainer moulded to to the base on the right of the handle. The cone shaped snuffer sits on top of the retainer.
The majority of the upper surface of both items is decorated in the usual scrolling green foliage pattern and is painted with green, pink, orange, blue, black enamels with copious gilding, the subjects include lotus flowers, peonies and butterflies.
The base of the chamber stick has three cartouches or panels, the nozzle or column of the chamberstick has two panels, as does the snuffer. Each panel is painted in the same bright enamel colours with either Chinese figures in different domestic scenes, flowers and shrubs, or birds and butterflies. Some collectors refer to this highly collectable design as "Mandarin pattern".
This chamberstick is in very good antique condition with a little rubbing to the gilding, particularly on the handle. On the rim of the candle nozzle to the right of the handle there is a small piece that has been chipped and the two pieces glued back into place. There is a tiny chip to the underside of the rim of the base to the left of the handle. The snuffer has a tight crack to the base. There is some minor fritting dating from manufacture. No other chips, cracks nor restoration. Please see the images
This is a beautiful item to add to any collection of Chinese famille rose medallion ware, Mandarin pattern or useful and highly decorative antique porcelain.
