Chinese Export Porcelain Platter hand painted blue & white antique 1740 Qianlong - three cranes two pine trees rocks & Lingzhi fungus 12 inches long

A small oval shaped antique Chinese export porcelain platter, meat plate, serving dish or small charger with hand painted decoration in under-glaze cobalt blue and white with a brown Batavian rim.

The beautifully and confidently hand painted design in the centre of the plate has three cranes, one in flight, one amongst rocks, two pine trees and Lingzhi fungus. Some collectors may refer to this design as a scholar's garden landscape.  There is an outer border of diamond diaper pattern and a similar wider inner border with four cartouches containing peony flower decoration. The base is flat and is slightly orange in colour with sand inclusions.

Cranes are symbols of longevity and peace in Chinese culture.  Pine trees also symbolise longevity, steadfastness, and self-discipline, endurance, long life. In addition Lingzhi fungus has been viewed as a magic herb and an auspicious symbol of long life. The design is a therefore a wish to the owner of a peaceful long life!

It dates to the mid eighteenth century, circa 1740, during the reign of the Emperor Qianlong 乾隆 (1736-95) in the Qing dynasty 清代.

The plate is 12 inches (30.5 cm) long by 8 7/8 inches (22.5 cm) wide and is 1 3/16 inch (3.0 cm) high, it weighs 662g unpacked.

It is in good antique condition with some minor fritting, there are two small chips to the rim on the front and a larger one to the back, each have been repaired being filled and then disguised with paint - "restored". There is sand fritting to the base which has a slight warp to it so it rocks very slightly.  It is a very attractive item to add to a collection of antique blue and white hand painted Chinese 18th century porcelain of the early Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty. The date of this equates to the British reign of George II in the 18th century.
