Chinese Style Porcelain Hexagonal Ginger Jar French Edme Samson Antique c 1890
An enamelled porcelain Chinese style baluster shaped hexagonal moulded lidded ginger jar by the French maker Edme Samson of Paris. This is an antique reproduction dating from the late 19th century circa 1890 copying an eighteenth century Chinese style lidded jar.
This lovely porcelain six sided relief moulded ginger jar with plantain leaf moulded borders. There are floral sprays decoration to each panel and a pink scale ground and cell border decoration in green, black and pink enamel and gilding. The lid is also relief moulded on the top with plantain leaves and decorated in the centre with a pink rose, the sides have diaper and rococo scroll decoration in the form of stylised bats.
The lidded jar stands 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm) high and is about 4 1/2 inches (11.5 cm) across the corners. It weighs 559 g unpacked and is in very good condition with no chips cracks nor restoration to the base, there is a small filled and disguised chip with short associated crack to the lid.
